Filter Press Technology
What happens inside a filter press during one cycle, from feed to cake release.
Pressure, cloth and time: the three things a press trades against each other to make cake.

- Pressure
- 0.6 – 1.6 MPa
- Cake thickness
- 25 – 40 mm
- Cycle
- 20 – 60 min
Why this matters
Pressure, cloth and time: the three things a press trades against each other to make cake.
A cycle has three phases. Feed fills the chambers and builds the cake on the cloth, the pumping phase pushes water through while the cake thickens, and the closing unit holds the stack shut against that pressure. Cycle time and cake moisture trade against each other, and the cloth sets both.
Key engineering points
-
The closing end holds the stack
A hydraulic cylinder closes the plate pack and keeps it closed against the feed pressure.
-
Feed pressure builds the cake
Slurry fills each chamber and the solids build up on the cloth from both sides.
-
Cloth choice decides the cycle
The cloth sets how fast water passes and how easily the cake releases.
Process flow
The stages below are the standard DELIAN sequence — the same sequence drawn as a rail and explained stage by stage.
- 01ScreeningRemove coarse solids before the slurry enters the separation circuit.
- 02DesandingRecover the sand fraction with hydrocyclones and a sand screw.
- 03ConditioningDose flocculant and mix so the fines can be filtered.

Frequently asked questions
The duty: thicker plates and higher pressure for higher throughput, lower pressure where cloth life matters more.
The stack opens plate by plate and the cake drops onto a conveyor or into a skip.
