Cake Squeezing
How a membrane plate squeezes water out of the cake after the chambers have filled.
Filtration has a ceiling; squeezing raises it. The membrane pushes the cake from both sides and the water leaves through the cloth.

Why this matters
Filtration has a ceiling; squeezing raises it. The membrane pushes the cake from both sides and the water leaves through the cloth.
A membrane plate carries a flexible diaphragm behind the filter cloth. Once the chambers are full, water or air pressurises the diaphragm and the cake is compressed from both sides. Water that pressure alone would leave behind is displaced through the cloth, so the same frame produces a drier and firmer cake.
Key engineering points
-
Squeeze is mechanical
No more water is pumped in; the cake is compressed and the water is displaced.
-
Cake release improves
A squeezed cake is firmer and comes off the cloth cleanly.
-
Membranes are a wearing part
They are sized and specified for the cycle count of the duty.

Frequently asked questions
When cake transport or tipping is charged per tonne, or when the cake has to be stackable.
Fines-heavy sludges respond best; a jar test shows the gain before you buy it.
