Industrial Sludge Dewatering
Process and wastewater sludge dewatering, with the filtration cycle matched to the sludge chemistry.
Circular thickeners that settle the fines and return clear water to the circuit.
A thickener takes the cheapest water out of a slurry. The tank settles the fines, the rake draws them to the centre and the overflow goes back to the circuit clean enough to reuse — so the filter press is sized on the underflow instead of on the whole flow.

On a large flow of fine slurry, thickening in front of the press is what makes the plant pay: the same press then treats a fraction of the water it would otherwise have to filter, and the water taken off the top is clean enough to go back to the slurry tank.
DELIAN builds the thickener to the duty rather than to a series. The settling test sets the diameter and the rise rate, the underflow sets the rake torque, and the feedwell and the dosing are arranged so the flocs form before they reach the bed. Tank, bridge and access are laid out for the site and the crane that site has — the tank in the photographs is being fabricated and pre-assembled in the works before it travels.
Diameter, depth and flocculant dose come from a settling test on your own slurry, not from a table.
The drive is sized for the underflow you will actually draw, including the morning after a stop.
The launder takes the overflow back to the slurry tank; only the underflow goes on to the press.
Tank, bridge and access are arranged around the space, the crane and the transport route you have.
For smaller flows the thickening, the dosing and the pumps arrive as one unit on a skid or in a container.
Where there is no room for a full clarifier, inclined plates do the same duty in a smaller footprint.
Typical range for this class of equipment — the figures for your unit are fixed in the quotation.
| Type | high-rate circular thickener, steel tank |
|---|---|
| Diameter | 6 – 30 m; larger on request |
| Side depth | 3 – 5 m, set by the settling rate |
| Drive | centre drive with rake lift, torque sized to the underflow |
| Feed | feedwell with flocculant dosing and mixing |
| Overflow | peripheral launder, returned to the circuit |
| Underflow | cone with pump, discharged to the filter press feed |
| Materials | carbon steel, painted or galvanised; stainless on request |
| Dosing | flocculant station sized from the settling test |
| Supply | tank and bridge, or a containerised thickening unit |
When the flow is large and the solids are fine. Thickening takes the water off cheaply, and the press is then sized on the underflow instead of on the whole stream.
Usually yes. The settling test gives the dose, and dosing into the feedwell is what makes a high-rate thickener settle as specified.
Smaller tanks travel in sections and are bolted and welded on site, which is why this one was pre-assembled in the works before it left.
Flow rate, solids concentration, particle size and a settling test if one exists. The site plan then sets the diameter that will fit.
